The team began in January 2000 with the name First Impressions Display Team. The idea being to promote majorettes in a social fun way, performing at fetes and local festivities with an option for members to partake in the competition side if they wish. The core elements to the team would be the social side and fundraising as to allow the membership to attract a wider audience. With members present and past deciding to join the team the membership began to grow. Throughout the summer months of 2000 the team recruited through advertisements, performing at local events and word of mouth. Eight years on the team continue to be supported by some of the members who joined in 2000.
During the 2001 season the team were introduced to the Kent Youth Association and United Kingdom Federation of Majorettes (UKFM). The UKFM brought the equipment side of majorettes, flag, wheel, ribbon, mace, poms and big silks into the spotlight. With individual, duo, trio and group events available in Kent regional competitions the team decided to become members.
The fetes and displays continue to form the summer calendar with the UKFM events during the winter months. Competitions have remained optional for the members whereby the fetes and displays are paramount to the social and fundraising side of the team. The costumes, equipment and fees for team events are supported by the fundraising.
The team changed its name in October 2007 to Medway Baton Twirlers - a name we feel reflects what we do and where we come from.
The success of the team is a result of hours of social partnerships, personal efforts and fundraising by so many people. The thank you list would use up all the bandwidth, but those reading this page who have contributed to the success of the team a BIG THANK YOU, we are truly grateful.
